Martinsburg offers visitors easy access to outdoor recreation in West Virginia. Area riding stables provide trail rides for beginners and experienced horseback riders alike while local tour companies take participants on rafting and kayaking adventures down the nearby Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Also within driving distance are hiking and biking trails, state parks, hot springs and other outdoor leisure spots. Another outdoor activity of note in the area is the annual Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival, which celebrates the annual apple harvest with apple pie baking contests, live entertainment, fireworks and a parade. Indoor attractions in the city include the Arts Centre, a community art education and exhibition space. Each year, the Arts Centre hosts the West Virginia Wine and Arts Festival, which brings together the best in regional wine and folk art, live music and children's entertainment. Visitors to the historic Apollo Civic Theatre enjoy live community theatre and drama workshops.
